UN to assist Tokelau governance with local volunteers

From , 3:02 pm on 1 August 2018

The United Nations is recruiting three volunteers in Tokelau to help inform the UN about the atolls and to assist in the educating and equipping of village councils.

In April, the UN led its second mission to Tokelau in eight years.

Aboard the ferry travelling from Apia was Simona Marinescu, the UN's new representiative for the Cook Islands, Samoa, Niue and Tokelau.

Since she started in the role in March, the UN has embarked on an ambitious plan to enlist volunteers in Tokelau who will report back on developments.

But as Ms Marinescu told Mackenzie Smith, the volunteers will also work with the Taupulega, or village councils, to improve local governance.
