Fears a refugee child could die in Australia's offshore camps

An Australian human rights lawyer has grave concerns that continued interference by immigration officials in the medical care of Nauru and Manus detainees could result in the death of a child.

George Newhouse from the National Justice Project says an adolescent refugee girl he represents has been allowed into Australia for urgent medical care only after a federal court dismissed immigration ministry attempts to block her entry.

Mr Newhouse says immigration minister Peter Dutton and officials have attempted to stop more than a dozen children from being transferred to Australia on medical grounds.

George Newhouse spoke with Dominic Godfrey about the minister's challenge to his client's transfer.
