Plans to produce natural insect repellent in Pacific

From , 5:01 am on 13 August 2018

There are plans to roll-out a natural insect repellent in the Pacific and promote local production, after trials were conducted in New Caledonia.

Michael Oelgemöller from James Cook University sources the eucalyptus-based product from trees near the university in Queensland.

But he says it has potential to be produced, distributed and sold throughout the Pacific Islands, and has proven success in New Caledonia.

Mr Oelgemöller told Mackenzie Smith the product would be especially effective in countries threatened by mosquito-borne diseases.
