Shortage of land leads to inappropriate uses in Solomons

From , 3:02 pm on 14 August 2018

The acting Commissioner of Lands in Solomon Islands says the way people have been acquiring land in the capital of Honiara needs to change.

Alan McNeil says applications to his office need to be halted as there is a severe shortage of appropriate space.

He told Koro Vaka'uta there has been a tradition of people going to the government for land instead of an estate agent and the land had been given without hesitation.

Alan McNeil says his office has been flooded with applications for government land but most of what is left is steep or road reserves.

He says out of desperation, even that is now being built on.
