Tongan toll free line to help smokers quit

From , 5:03 am on 20 September 2018

Tonga has set up a new Quitline telephone support service to help smokers give up tobacco use as part of a hard-hitting campaign just launched in the Kingdom.

Graphic images illustrating the risks of tobacco, with a specific focus on the link to heart attacks and strokes are a feature of the multimedia 'Quit Smoking Now' or Tuku Ifi Leva programme.

The Ministry of Health says 46 per cent of men and 13 per cent of women smoke in Tonga and many more, including children, are affected by second-and smoke.

Senior Tobacco Officer, Tupou Tuilautala, says smokers will lose about 10 years of their lives and everyone has a right to live smokefree.

He spoke to Jenny Meyer about the Quitline.
