An Australian comedian has been escorted off Papua New Guinea's Manus Island for filming refugees without a journalist's visa.

Dan Ilic was collecting footage for Doha Debates, which will address the global refugee crisis later this year in Qatar.

Mr Ilic told Ben Robinson Drawbridge he was surprised by the resilience of some refugees after six years of detention.
