A vaccination programme to protect women from cervical cancer is being launched in Solomon Islands this month by the children's charity UNICEF.

The agency says Human Papilloma Viruses are extremely common world wide, they are sexually acquired and can cause cervical cancer.

The head of UNICEF Pacific says HPV vaccines work best if administered prior to exposure to the virus, and the agency hopes to reach all girls in the Solomons between the ages of 9 and 14, to protect them before they become sexually active.

Sheldon Yett spoke with Jenny Meyer about the vaccination programme.
