The lawyer for Manus Island refugees says his clients could escape Papua New Guinea once they're awarded compensation by its courts.

But Ben Lomai says they could end up on Nauru.

The courts ruled in 2016 the refugees were wrongfully imprisoned and Dr Lomai says they'll have to award damages that could run into hundreds of millions of dollars.

He told Ben Robinson Drawbridge another massive bill for compensation could prompt Australia to move about 550 refugees out of PNG.
