1:15 Robots and Racism: Are Robots too white?

A new study from Canterbury University and Monash University academics shows humans have the same racial biases towards robots as they do towards other humans.

One of the study's authors, Dr Christoph Bartneck, joins us to talk about the evidence, the implications, and what we should be doing about it.

1.30 Reviving Australia's indigenous languages

The indigenous Australians have more than 250 distinct languages - some of them with few speakers and next to no written records.

But Karina Lester from First Languages Australia wants to bring them back, one at a time - and her organisation is starting off in the country's schools.

2:10 Education through entertainment - Riddle + Squizz, where kids ask the darndest things

Kids have a knack for coming up with great questions: how is electricity created? Why are balloons so floaty? Why can't you touch a rainbow?

So Hana Miller, the creative director of Wellington visual production company RDYSTDY, decided to bring those questions and answers to life for the small screen with a new online kiwi kids' show called Riddle + Squizz.

Tricia Hewlett tells us about the 3 day Banks Track walk in Banks Peninsula, which is a private walking track, so costs upwards of 200 dollars to do.  The 29 kilometre walk crosses farmland, runs alongside the Flea Bay marine reserve and through Hinewai Reserve, with incredible coastal views, native bush, waterfalls and beaches.

3:25 Critter of the Week

It’s all in the name with this week’s critter – the ‘NZ fish-guts plant’; because as those that have ever come across it exclaim – “you smell it before you see it!”.

DOC’s Threatened Species Ambassador, Nicola Toki explains that, even with a nose-peg, it is quite a difficult task to give a helping hand to this endangered plant.

CRITTER OF THE WEEK T-SHIRTS!

NZ is full of amazing native creatures, and many of them are not cute and pretty! We are celebrating those less loved critters with some limited edition t-shirts illustrated by the amazing @giselledraws.

She was assisted by science advisor Mike Dickison and DoC's Threatened Species Ambassador, Nicola Toki.

To order a t-shirt please click here.

HELPING THE CRITTERS

We have set aside 5 dollars from every t-shirt sale and plan to donate it to a community volunteer group that is working on local habitat protection or critter conservation. To apply please email us details of what your group does and what you would do with the money. Jesse@radionz.co.nz
