1:15 Antarctica's future: Climate change and tourism

New Zealand has vested interest in Antarctica. The geological closeness and the our history with the white continent means questions over its future hold importance for us. 

Climate change is one of those serious questions marks. How will Antarctica survive what's coming, politically as well as environmentally.

These issues are being discussed at a panel of Massey University security specialists tomorrow night, as part of the University's public lecture series. 

Centre for Defence and Security Studies senior lecturer Dr Marc Lanteigne tells us what he's concerned about.

Our native plants were cultivated and utilised by Māori for hundreds of years. But how they were grown, and what they were used for, has for a long time been somewhat of a mystery to the wider public. 

Journalist Rob Tipa has sort to fix that, writing a book containing traditional knowledge about the native plants of the South Island. 

Treasures of Tāne: Plants of Ngāi Tahu covers the histories of more than fifty plants, looking beyond the flowers to divulge the hidden potential. 

Author Rob Tipa walks us through creating the catalogue.

In Taranaki a group of community members have come together to revitalise the natural biodiversity of the region. 

The Restore Taranaki initiative is working to engage locals in making a positive impact on the environment, with the simple message of 'small change, big difference' - getting people to think of their region as a shared backyard. 

Tonight the work of the initiative is being celebrated so we thought we'd hear about what kind of changes are being made.

2:20 Treaty of Waitangi graphic novel

Last week schools around the country with year 7 and 8 students were treated to a new school journal - a comic book in fact - all about one of our most important historical artefacts, The Treaty of Waitangi.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi tries a fresh approach at helping Kiwi kids understand, and enjoy learning about, the treaty. 

With fun illustrations and simple language, the book covers everything from the signing of the treaty, to the New Zealand Wars, and even the settlement process.

Matt Weinert is the Industry Development Officer for Bananas with the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries. He's otherwise known as the Banana Guru. What he doesn't know about bananas is not worth knowing. He'll talk to Jesse about how the banana came to be the most popular fruit in the world, how the standard yellow banana you buy in the supermarket is just the tip of the banana ice-berg, and the prospects of a banana industry in New Zealand.

Trusting kids to face consequences and learn from mistakes is a theory of discipline called The Apprenticeship Model. It replaces the reward and punishment style of parenting with teaching kids how to take responsibility for themselves. 

Journalist and parenting expert  Katherine Reynolds Lewis explains the unique approach in her book,  The Good News About Bad Behavior: Why Kids Are Less Disciplined Than Ever And What to Do About It.
