1:15 Bluff gin distillery part of rejuvenation project

Thousands of jobs were lost when Bluff's Ocean Beach freezing works closed down in 1991 and the Southland population dropped dramatically as a consequence.

But now, investment in a new tourism hub and aquaculture park is rejuvenating the site.

One of the projects is a multi-million dollar investment in the Bluff Distillery Gin, which opens today at the former freezing works site.

On Walk 2 Work Day, people are encouraged to work or to other everyday activities.

1:35 Kaimanawa horses need new homes, how to help.

The Department of Conservation has completed its annual ariel survey of Kaimanawa Wild horses and theres a large excess of horses that will need new homes.

To be exact, the herd count 530, and according to the Kaimanawa Wild Horse Advisory Group management plan, that puts the target removal number at 230.

Applications will be closing in 4 to 6 weeks, so if you're thinking of applying for a horse now is the time.

The business operates as a wholesaler to a number of family run retailers but there's also a retail outlet in Auckland.

Summer is officially over and Autumn has begun. It’s a time of year that fungi lovers across the country get excited about as all sorts of weird and wonderful fruiting bodies emerge out of the dark. 

This week’s critter celebrates the beggining of the fungi season – the Fischer’s egg fungus, Claustula fischeri, is one of the rarest and most endangered fungi in Aotearoa.
