Striking teachers: 'We've got to look at the future of our profession'

From Checkpoint, 5:23 pm on 26 October 2018

Primary school teachers will walk out of classes next month to highlight concerns over poor pay and huge class sizes. Checkpoint visited Auckland's Gladstone Primary where one teacher, who was looking after 40 students, explained why she voted to strike.

Teachers have rejected a 9.3 percent pay rise over three years, with the union saying the pay was too low to attract and keep teachers, while class sizes and workloads were too high.

Today at Gladstone Primary, a bad case of laryngitis left them a teacher short, and with not a relief teacher to be found anywhere in the city teacher Kahli Oliveira  -  Mrs O to her students -  was left to corral two full classes of kids, rather than the usual one.
