Less blood needed in surgery transfusions - study

Dr Shay McGuinness, an Intensive Care Specialist at Auckland City Hospital, was one of the lead investigators into a study looking into how much blood is needed in transfusions during surgery. "The surprising thing we found was that in older patients - those over 75 years old - having open heart surgery, they actually did better if we used less blood," Dr McGuinness tells Guyon Espiner.
