A quarter of NZ teens have sex before 16 - survey

From Morning Report, 6:48 am on 2 November 2018

It's estimated that a quarter of young New Zealanders are having sex before they're 16 - the age of consent. More than 10,000 people aged 16 to 74 were surveyed in 2014 and 2015 about their sexual behaviours and a summary of the results has been published for the first time. It's the first national survey of heterosexual activity in New Zealand since 1990. It also says that by age 17, half of all New Zealanders have had sex. And that having sex younger than 16 is more likely among Maori and Pasifika men. Niki Stefanogiannis from the Ministry of Health says condom use is on the rise among young people and that's encouraging.
