NZ soldiers remembered at Le Quesnoy

The centenary of New Zealand troops liberating the French town of Le Quesnoy (Le ken-wah) on the Western Front in the First World War has been commemorated overnight in the town. About 1300 people turned out, including 350 descendants of the men, who using a ladder, scaled the walls and captured the German garrison which had occupied the town for most of the war. The liberation was the last major action by New Zealand troops in the war and was achieved without damage to the town or the loss of life of residents.
