Wellington cafe pioneer remembered

From Morning Report, 8:58 am on 13 November 2018

Wellington is now known well for its cafe culture, bars and restaurants. But back in the 1960s, pubs closed at 6pm and toasted cheese and pineapple sandwiches were the most exotic choice on the menu. Into this bleak field arrived Dutch immigrant, Suzy van der Kwast. Her coffee house - Suzy's - offered real coffee and European-style food, and set alight the cafe scene. In 2010, Mrs van der Kwast told Kim Hill she had loved her work. Suzy van der Kwast died last Thursday, aged 80. Susette Goldsmith is her biographer. She talks to Philippa Tolley.
