Penguins' rescue by wildlife filmmakers raises ethical questions

From Morning Report, 8:55 am on 22 November 2018

A decision by Sir David Attenborough's BBC film crew to intervene to save a group of penguins trapped in a ravine has sparked a heated debate among wildlife documentary makers. Some have complained it breaches a long standing convention that nature must be left to take its course when cameras are rolling. The penguins had either fallen or been blown into a gully. The crew dug a shallow ramp so they could climb out. Neil Harraway is a pioneer of natural history documentary-making in New Zealand and has made documentaries about penguins in Antarctica. He talks to Guyon Espiner.
