Radical changes hoped for in mental health

From Morning Report, 8:28 am on 4 December 2018

The mother of a man who killed himself while in mental health care is hoping for a radical change to the country's approach to mental health. The public will learn the recommendations of the Mental Health Inquiry for the first time later on Tuesday. A six-person panel has spent roughly 10 months consulting people around the country, holding more than 400 meetings and considering about five thousand submissions. It delivered a 200 page report and 40 recommendations to the Health Minister David Clark last week. While the government is publishing the report today, it won't formally respond with its plan until March. Jane Stevens' son Nicky died while he was staying at a Hamilton mental health unit. She made a submission to the inquiry and spoke to the panel as part of the Bereaved Whanau Network.
