A century-old gold mine near Waihi in the Coromandel is about to be brought back to life and start producing ore. New Talisman Gold Mines is set to ramp up production to extract thousands of tonnes of ore a year from a mine tucked deep into a mountain.
The company has hopes of a big return for itself and the local community. But as Madison Reidy reports, local hostility and official indifference are making the company feel unwelcome.
