An armed Mongrel Mob member was killed in a shootout with police near Kawerau after robbing a bank, trying to ram a police car and firing at officers. The police first went to the 29-year-old man's home on a family violence call-out on Thursday morning, and found he had left in a car, under the influence of methamphetamine and carrying a firearm. At a press conference, the Bay of Plenty's district commander Superintendent Andy McGregor, said at that point the armed offenders squad were deployed.
