Christchurch mosque attacks: First funerals expected on Monday

From Morning Report, 6:10 am on 18 March 2019

The first funerals for the victims of the Christchurch mosque attacks are expected as early as Monday as the bodies of those killed on Friday start to be returned to their families. The Chief Coroner, Judge Deborah Marshall says she is very aware of the families' distress over the time it had been taking to return the bodies of the victims. But she says it's critical the identification process follows best international practice. A call has gone out for Muslims across the country to come to help prepare and bury the 50 victims. One of those who will be helping is the Imam of the At-Taqwa mosque in Auckland, Mohammed Anwar. He spoke to our producer Jeremy Wilkinson and said most families have been understanding about the police holding onto their family members until they have been formally identified.
