Peters heads to Turkey to 'set the record straight'

From Morning Report, 7:22 am on 21 March 2019

The Prime Minister says her deputy is on his way to Turkey to set the record straight. Winston Peters will be meeting with the Turkish President, days after a campaign rally where Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticised the Anzacs' role in Gallipoli and threatened he would send home anyone who attempted to attack his country in a casket - "like their grandfathers were". The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has called in Turkey's ambassador for a please explain and Australia is reviewing its travel advice to the country in light of the comments. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has described the comments as reckless, offensive and deeply upsetting. Jacinda Ardern told media in Christchurch on Wednesday Mr Peter's would be forthright in his discussions with Mr Erdogan. Ms Ardern says New Zealanders have an expectation of visiting Gallipoli each year. Winston Peters, stopping in Indonesia to pay his condolences to one of the victims of the terror attack, is playing down the comments by the Turkish President, after Mr Erdogan wrote an opinion piece in the Washington Post. It ended in saying: "Finally, all Western leaders must learn from the courage, leadership and sincerity of New Zealand's Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, to embrace Muslims living in their respective countries."
