The Prime Minister will travel to China on Sunday to meet with President Xi Jinping amid ongoing speculation of a strained relationship with China. An Australian academic says the visit presents an opportunity for Jacinda Ardern to raise the persecution of the Uighur population, a Muslim minority held in what has been decribed as mass detention centres. A United Nations panel says more than one million Uighurs and other Muslims are held in Xinjiang. Dr David Brophy, is a senior lecturer in Modern Chinese History at the University of Sydney. He says there has been a severe crackdown on the Uighur population in northwestern China over the last two years.
