Gun buy-back to cost up to $200m - Police Minister

From Morning Report, 7:47 am on 2 April 2019

The government is sticking to its estimate that buying back semi-automatic and military-style rifles will cost between $100 and $200 million. A law banning most semi-automatic rifles is expected to be passed by the end of next week. It will set up a buy-back scheme allowing gun owners to hand over weapons and parts that have been made unlawful by the law change. The Council of Licenced Firearms Owners say the scheme could cost twice as much as the government's estimate. Stuart Nash is the Minister of Police, and speaks to Guyon Espiner.
