Collins' call for greater police powers 'absurd' - sociologist

A specialist on gangs says Judith Collins' call for the police to be given the power to raid gang houses at will to search for guns is absurd. Ms Collins wants police to be able to search gang property, regardless of whether there is any evidence of illegal guns being kept there. She made the call after a Mongrel Mob member said gangs would not willingly surrender their guns when tougher firearms laws come into force. But sociologist and gangs researcher Jarrod Gilbert says it's absurd to suggest that police should be able to arbitrarily perform searches. He speaks to Guyon Espiner.
