Poor schools as good as rich schools - NZ Initiative survey
Schools in the poorest communities are doing just as good a job as those in the richest, according to research by the New Zealand Initiative think tank. It has figured out how much of a students' results is due to their family background and how much is down to their school by using used Statistics New Zealand information about 400-thousand people with NCEA results. It says it can calculate which secondary schools are punching above their weight and which are cruising, but it can't publish the results because of confidentiality requirements. John Gerritsen has the details.
