'Every child fluent in te reo - how would that look for our country?'

A $12 million plan to roll out Māori language courses for teachers and school staff is being hailed as a good start but some say it needs to go further. On Monday the government launched Te Ahu o te Reo Māori - which aims to improve Māori language skills across the education workforce - and which will help 700 teachers this year. Staff at schools and kura will be able to access reo lessons through wānanga or workshops, and online learning support. It's part of a move to integrate te reo into the school curriculum and boost its correct use in the classroom. Myles Ferris is the president of Te Akatea Māori Principals' Association.
