Mosque attacks victims' fund: $1.35m more distributed

From Morning Report, 7:23 am on 17 April 2019

Another $1.35 million out of the money donated to the victims of the mosque shootings is to be paid out by the end of the month. Initially the families of those killed received $15,000 and the injured $5,000 each. More than four weeks on and that money has been spent, leading to questions over why more of the roughly $25m raised so far could not be given to those most in need. Of the $25m, $6m has been collected by the Muslim community itself from donations from in New Zealand as well as overseas. Ahmad Zainuldin, who is chair of the Islamic Information Centre, says the families need more help now to pay everyday bills such as rent and groceries. (This story has been corrected. It originally stated an extra $3m would go to victims and their families; the correct figure is $1.35m.)
