Holiday road crashes 'devastating' - Taupō mayor

Easter in New Zealand has become as unfortunately as synonymous with road fatalities as it is with chocolate eggs. Since 1980, 318 people have died on our roads during the easter road toll period which starts at 4pm Friday and ends at 6am on Tuesday. Last year seven people lost their lives during the easter period. And it's been a sad lead-up to easter with 26 people dying on the roads between March 29 through to April 5 this year - five members of one family died in an accident near Taupo on April 1. Susie Ferguson speaks to the mayor of Taupo District, David Trewavas. He says the crashes have been devastating for the whole community.
