Sri Lanka govt says attacks 'retaliation' to Christchurch

From Morning Report, 7:09 am on 24 April 2019

Sri Lanka's deputy defence minister has claimed that the Easter Sunday attacks which killed 321 people were in retaliation for the Christchurch mosque attacks. The minister gave no evidence for his claims and our own government has said they have also seen no evidence to support that claim. Later on Tuesday night Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe put it more cautiously, saying that investigators were looking into a possible connection. There have been no details released about what had led the investigators to think that the bombings might have been related. And it was not clear how that theory aligned with warnings months earlier that Islamist radicals posed a serious threat and were stockpiling explosives and other weapons. Following the attacks in Christchurch, Islamic State called for retaliation. The group has since claimed responsibility for the bombings in Sri Lanka. Morning Report producer Jeremy Wilkinson spoke to our correspondent in Colombo, Patrick Fok, about the latest developments.
