WorkSafe watching ports closely after worker death

From Morning Report, 6:47 am on 20 June 2019

WorkSafe says it's paying close attention to the port industry, after a worker fell to his death at Wellington's CentrePort in 2017.

The District Court has fined Centreport more than half a million dollars - the company also has to pay more than $150,000 in reparation to the man's family.

Teihi Whaanga was using a ladder to get up on the roof of the container repair facility when he fell and hit his head on the concrete below.

WorkSafe's head of specialist interventions, Simon Humphries, told RNZ reporter Michael Cropp the man did not need to die.
