Department of Conservation takes over Fox River clean-up

From Morning Report, 8:53 am on 20 June 2019

The Westland mayor is delighted the Department of Conservation will take over the clean-up of the Fox River after devastating floods in March.

An old landfill was eroded by the flood waters, spreading rubbish along kilometres of the West Coast and the Fox and Cook riverbeds.

The clean-up was put on hold last month when the Westland District Council ran out of funds. But now DOC has taken up the job.

Bruce Smith is the Westland District Mayor. He talks to Susie Ferguson.
