'NZ' mushrooms actually from China, farmer warns

From Morning Report, 7:53 am on 25 June 2019

Consumers are being warned some shiitake mushrooms sold in supermarkets and high-end restaurants as New Zealand grown, are actually being imported from China.

A Hawke's Bay mushroom farmer says an increasing number of local shiitake mushroom growers have switched to growing shiitake on cheaper, imported logs.

He fears some of the produce maybe contaminated with heavy metals like lead and arsenic, and he thinks consumers should be told where their food is coming from.

RNZ Hawke's Bay reporter Anusha Bradley has the story.
