E-scooter safety under scrutiny after Auckland death

From Morning Report, 6:15 am on 26 June 2019

The safety of e-scooters is being questioned after the country's first death involving a Lime scooter.

A 59-year-old man died on Monday night on Auckland's Fanshawe Street.

Police are still making inquiries into what happened. In a second incident on the same street a woman was hit by an e-scooter yesterday while stepping off the bus onto the footpath.

An Auckland Councillor is calling for e-scooters to be removed until their safety can be guaranteed. A spokesperson for pedestrian advocacy group Living Streets Aotearoa, Ellen Blake, told RNZ reporter Tom Furley things need to change.
