The New Zealand government says it can't immediately provide explicit protection for trans and gender diverse people under the law, despite the United Nations asking for change.
In January, the UN's Human Right's Council made 194 recommendations for the country to improve its human rights record.
On Thursday the government advised it has accepted 160 of those recommendations, but changes to abortion rights and prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity and intersex status are not among them.
The Justice Minister, Andrew Little, told RNZ reporter Tom Furley he is committed to changing those laws.and the government is still actively working on the recommendations that they've not yet signed off on.
