Govt plans imported electric car discount, fee on high-emitters

From Morning Report, 7:10 am on 9 July 2019

The government wants to create a rebate on imported electric cars of up to $8,000 while adding as much as $3,000 to the cost of the most heavily polluting gas guzzlers.

The new levies would cover all new and used light vehicles coming into the country and would not apply to cars already on New Zealand roads.

Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter tells Corin Dann the policies would help make electric, hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles a "realistic option" for more New Zealanders.
