Rare snail under threat from mountain bikers

From Morning Report, 6:19 am on 10 July 2019

A tiny snail found only in Wellington is under threat from mountain bikers.

The Potamopyrgus oppidanus was discovered in 2003 - Te Ahumairangi Hill is the only place in the world they've been found.

A small group of mountain bikers are churning up the forest and chopping down trees to make their own unauthorised trails, threatening the snails' environment.

Te Ahumairangi Ecological Restoration Group member Bronwen Shepherd told RNZ reporter Harry Lock why the snails are so important.
