Employers are being urged to stop ignoring the issue of the aging workforce, or face the impact on their businesses and the overall economy. In 20 years' time, Statistics New Zealand estimates that one in three New Zealanders aged over 65 - 400,000 - will still be working. Currently 74 per cent of those aged 60 to 64 are working, compared to the average of 67 per cent for all ages.

But a survey of businesses by the Commission for Financial Capability found the vast majority have no specific strategies or policies relating to older workers.

The head of the CFFC, Retirement Commissioner Diane Maxwell says businesses need to get their heads out of the sand.
