Redemption time on day ten of Commonwealth Games

12:57 pm on 14 April 2018

Both the Silver Ferns and cyclist Sam Gaze will be looking to re-write very recent history at the Commonwealth Games today.

New Zealand athletes won five medals on day nine of the Games - a silver each for pole vaulter Eliza McCartney and shot putter Dame Valerie Adams, and three bronze medals in boxing.

The medal table still has New Zealand at sixth overall, behind Australia, England, India, Canada and South Africa.

Today's medal chances have already got off to a good start, after Georgia Williams won silver in the women's road race this afternoon - finishing just a hair behind the winner Chloe Hosking of Australia.

The men's race kicks off in the early afternoon, with mountain bike gold medallist Sam Gaze among the starters.

Gaze will probably be hoping to erase the current public perception of him, after he lost his temper at teammate Anton Cooper and accused him of bad sportsmanship, when Cooper failed to stop to help him with a puncture during the mountain bike race on Thursday.

The Silver Ferns will also be hunting for redemption when they play Australia in their netball semi-final, after going down to Malawi and England in pool play, and only squeaking through to the play-offs on goal difference.

Both the men's and women's hockey teams have trans-Tasman show-downs for gold, as does boxer David Nyika, who will fight Australia's Jason Whately.

It will be a busy day for squash supremo Joelle King, who will play in the women's doubles semi-final alongside Amanda Landers-Murphy, before joining mixed doubles teammate Paul Coll a few hours later in the mixed doubles play-off for bronze.

Also playing off for bronze is the women's basketball team.

The men's rugby sevens team kicks off its campaign with pool matches against Zambia, Kenya and Canada, and the women's team play their Canadian counterparts too.

There are more wrestling bouts, diver Lizzie Cui is back in action, and the shooting continues.
