An RNZ investigation into the death, two years ago today, of a New Zealand man in a Japanese psychiatric hospital has revealed inconsistencies in the medical documentation used to justify his extreme treatment.

Kelly Savage, 27, was working as an English teacher in Japan when he was hospitalised during a psychotic episode. He was tied to a bed for 10 days and died from suspected deep vein thrombosis.

In this video, his family tell his story, and RNZ asks why he was restrained for so long.
