A decision on a high -profile immigration case could be made this week.
Evangeline Stanners, 35, a mother of two who lives in Christchurch, has written to Associate Immigration Minister Kate Wilkinson asking for a medical waiver, which would allow her to stay in New Zealand.
A spokesperson from her office says a decision could be made within days.
Immigration has declined a residency application by Mrs Stanners due to her advanced kidney disease. Officials say the criteria is that immigrants do not place any unnecessary burden on the health system.
Dialysis treatment costs for her are estimated to be about $65,000 per year.
Mrs Stanners was diagnosed during her second pregnancy last year.
It means she will have to leave the country when her work permit runs out in January - despite being married to a New Zealander and having children born here. Mrs Stanners is from the Philippines.
Ms Wilkinson has already considered a letter from Wigram MP Jim Anderton on the case.
She said she was not prepared to intervene prior to an appeal to the Residency Review Board.
