One person was in a critical condition and six other people were treated in hospital after the crash on State Highway 1, at Waipu, about 9.40am.

A car was T-boned at the intersection of the state highway and Shoemaker Rd.

Four ambulances, the Fire Service and a helicopter attended.

The road was blocked at first, but had since reopened and the traffic was flowing normally, police said.

A towing company was called to remove two utes and a BMW.
