It comes five days after a man suffered moderate injuries after being shot while out walking on Saturday morning.

Police have repeatedly said there was not thought to be any risk to the public.

But in today's statement, Detective Senior Sergeant Stu Harvey said Mr Watkins could be unpredictable and caution should be taken by any member of the public who saw him or has dealings with him.

Mr Harvey said Mr Watkins was 24 years old, about 167cm tall and has connections to Invercargill, Dunedin and the Bay of Plenty.

The victim remains in hospital and police have emphasised he was an innocent party in the incident.
