The body of 39-year-old Mr Wallis and the helicopter wreckage were recovered last night, despite cold, deep water and bad weather hampering the search.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission opened an inquiry into the crash, which happened on Saturday afternoon during a routine flight in a Robinson R44 helicopter.

A TAIC spokesperson said the wreckage and Mr Wallis' body have been recovered.

Two investigators will gather evidence at the scene before the helicopter wreckage is eventually transported to a TAIC facility in Wellington.

The spokesperson confirmed the investigation would likely take at least 18 months to analyse the evidence and come forward with findings.

The inquiry would examine the people involved, equipment used, environmental factors and what the helicopter was doing, the spokesperson said.

The wreckage will eventually be transported to a TAIC facility in Wellington for further investigation.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

'Incredible support'

Police have praised the efforts of specialists and volunteers who provided support during the search for Mr Wallis.

The police, LandSAR, Coastguard, the Harbourmaster, the Rescue Coordination Centre and the Navy were among those involved.

Detective Sergeant Derek Shaw said the police were grateful for the many people who worked long hours in cold conditions as part of the search.

New Zealand was fortunate to be able to draw on a range of professionals dedicated to putting people first, Mr Shaw said.

The searchers received incredible support, he said.

"I know the Wallis family are truly grateful to everyone for the work they have done since Saturday.

"Police are aware that Matthew was a well-known figure in the area and that the community will want to join us in giving the family the space they now deserve."
