Tuturumuri School, east of Martinborough, was considered for closure after a combination of circumstances led to the school having no students at the end of last year.

The Education Minister, Chris Hipkins, said schools can provide an important community hub in rural New Zealand and that was taken into account in his decision to keep the school open.

It was clear to him that closing the school would cost children who would have to travel further to school, he said.

Attracting a suitable teaching principal in 2019 will be crucial to the long-term sustainability of the school, he said.
