The former appointee, Gregory Burke, was due to start at the gallery this month, but resigned in March following reports a harassment complaint had been made against him at a gallery in Canada.

Canada's public broadcaster, CBC reported the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission was investigating the allegation.

The Gallery's acting director, Chris Brooks, said Ms Paisley brings an extensive background in contemporary and modern art practice to the job.

"Following an extensive international search, we garnered a shortlist of exceptional candidates for the Director role. With the incumbent's withdrawal last month, we were able with confidence to immediately secure Kirsten's appointment."
