Surface flooding has also been reported in Dunedin and the Clutha and Gore districts.

The Transport Agency said care should be taken on Dunedin's southern motorway due to surface flooding, while snow and ice are causing issues on State Highway 87 between Middlemarch and Outram.

MetService is also forecasting snow showers for higher parts of the Crown Range, between Queenstown and Wanaka, and for the Milford Road.

No road closures have been made yet, but motorists are being warned to watch for debris and flooding.

MetService said strong westerly winds were also forecast for southern Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa and Marlborough this afternoon, and could turn to the southwest in the evening.
