They said 49-year-old Darren Myers, from the Wellington suburb of Karori, failed to return from the Northern Crossing in the mountain range north of Wellington.

He was due to finish a five-day tramp on Saturday but did not arrive at Mount Holdsworth near Masterton.

Police said yesterday they had "grave" concerns for wellbeing of Mr Myers.

There was atrocious weather in the area late last week into the weekend, with wind gusts of up to 145km/h and poor visibility and rain.

Police said the search would continue today in a limited capacity due to poor weather conditions.

A a helicopter using infrared technology would be dispatched weather permitting.
