Covid-19 update: 16 more deaths, 4869 community cases, 370 people in hospital

Another 16 people have died with Covid-19 - including a person in their 40s - and there are 4869 new community cases, the Ministry of Health says.

In a statement, the ministry said there were 370 people in hospital with the coronavirus, down slightly from 377 yesterday, with nine in ICU.

One of today's 16 new reported deaths included one person in their 40s; one in their 60s; four in their 70s; eight in their 80s; and two aged over 90. Four were women and 12 were men.

Two were from Northland, six were from the Auckland region, one was from Waikato; one was from Taranaki; two were from the Wellington region; three were from Canterbury; and one was from South Canterbury.

The total death toll of people who have died with Covid-19 in New Zealand is now 1390.

The seven-day rolling average of new community case numbers is 5247 yesterday, down from 6075 last week.

Today's cases were reported in the Northland (123), Auckland (1478), Waikato (335), Bay of Plenty (184), Lakes (77), Hawke's Bay (135), MidCentral (166), Whanganui (45), Taranaki (172), Tairāwhiti (33), Wairarapa (42), Capital and Coast (400), Hutt Valley (203), Nelson Marlborough (218), Canterbury (739), South Canterbury (59), Southern (427) and West Coast (32) DHBs.

There were also 64 new cases reported at the border.

There were 15 deaths and 5435 community cases reported yesterday.

New Zealand has now recorded 1,258,816 confirmed cases of Covid-19.

Meanwhile, teachers have claimed more than 183,000 sick days so far this year, nearly twice as many as at the same time in 2019 - the year before the pandemic, Ministry of Education figures show.

On Thursday, the government announced pre-departure tests for travellers coming to New Zealand would be scrapped from Monday 20 June. Travellers would still be required to self-test on day one and again on day five or six.
