A scrub fire started by a burning car coming down from the Remarkables near Queenstown has now been contained.

Footage shared on Twitter shows the four-wheel drive vehicle well alight by the side of the road, and then rolling into the grass berm.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said the fire, which had spread into nearby vegetation, is now under control but still being monitored.

It was attended by crews from Queenstown, Arrowtown, Frankton and Kingston, and two helicopters.
